Good to know: Senders with a genuine existing relationship (your bank, a charity you've donated to) may still write under their own legal basis. Unlist targets cold-contact marketing, which is the vast majority of junk mail.

Junk mail isn't just annoying.
It's wasteful.

The UK produces 17.5 billion items of junk mail every year — addressed and unaddressed combined — using 550,000 tonnes of paper and 16.5 billion litres of water in production.

The average household receives over 650 items a year, and most of it is never opened. Registering with the MPS alone removes you from up to 95% of mailing lists.

Letter of Authority — Junk Mail Opt-Out

To Whom It May Concern,

I, [Your Name], residing at [Your Address], hereby appoint Unlist (unlist.uk) to act on my behalf as my authorised agent for the limited purpose of managing my data privacy preferences and direct marketing opt-outs.

This authority includes submitting opt-out registrations to the Data & Marketing Association (DMA) "Your Choice" scheme, contacting the Royal Mail Door-to-Door opt-out department, and submitting GDPR Article 21 Right to Object data suppression requests to relevant data brokers including Experian, Equifax, and Whistl.

Regarding the MPS: I understand this must be completed by me directly at mpsonline.org.uk, and Unlist will direct me to do so after signup.

This authority is limited to managing postal marketing preferences and remains valid until revoked by me in writing.

Common questions

How long until junk mail actually stops?
Most schemes take 3–6 weeks. DMA and data broker suppressions are quickest. Royal Mail's opt-out can take up to 6 weeks from receipt of your signed form. MPS takes around 28 days once you complete registration.
Why do I need to do the MPS bit myself?
The MPS sends a confirmation link to your own email inbox to verify your identity — they won't accept third-party submissions without this step. It takes about 2 minutes at mpsonline.org.uk and the registration is permanent once done.
Why does the Royal Mail bit involve posting something?
Royal Mail's policy requires a householder's own signed form — they can't verify digital requests. We email them to trigger sending you the form. When it arrives, sign it and return it using the Freepost address printed on it — no stamp or envelope needed from you.
Why does it need renewing after 23 months?
Two opt-outs expire after roughly 2 years: DMA Your Choice and Royal Mail Door-to-Door. The MPS and GDPR data broker suppressions are permanent. We automatically re-file the two expiring ones and email you when the Royal Mail form is on its way again.
What happens to my data?
Your name, address, and postcode are stored encrypted in the EU (via Supabase) and used only to file opt-outs and send renewal emails. Your data is never sold. Request deletion anytime at hello@unlist.uk — though deletion ends your opt-out coverage.
